Williamsburg, Virginia – Barbara J. Andrus, a cherished school nurse and dedicated community volunteer, passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 91. Her contributions to the community and her family have left an indelible mark that will be fondly remembered.

Born on March 20, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, Barbara lived a vibrant life filled with service and love. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Kathleen Jowaisas, her son Michael Walton Andrus, her brother Joseph Jowaisas, and her grandson Kyle Andrus.

Barbara’s educational journey began at Suffern High School, from which she graduated in 1951. She then pursued a nursing degree at Plattsburgh State Teachers College in New York, graduating in 1955. Following her education, Barbara committed many years to serving as a school nurse at the Essex Fells School and in the Fairfield School District in New Jersey, where she touched countless lives.

In addition to her nursing career, Barbara found deep fulfillment in volunteering. She was an active member of St. Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg, Virginia, contributing to the design of the St. Bede Columbarium. She also dedicated her time at Williamsburg’s Sentara Hospital, helping patients and supporting the healthcare community.

Beyond her professional and volunteer commitments, Barbara had a passion for family and community. She was loved for her exceptional skills as a party organizer and hostess, often entertaining guests and family with joy. Her interests included reading, gardening, and birdwatching, activities that brought her much happiness. An avid dancer, Barbara was known for her love of tap dancing and was still performing with the aid of her walker just weeks before her passing.

Barbara’s marriage to Whitney “Whit” Andrus stands as a testament to their enduring love; they were set to celebrate 69 years of marriage on September 15. Barbara cherished her family, especially her grandchildren, with whom she enjoyed days at Water Country USA, creating lasting memories. Her time with her great-grandchildren was particularly precious, as they brought her abundant joy.

Barbara is survived by her beloved husband Whitney Andrus, alongside their children: Christopher Andrus, Timothy Andrus (Wendy), Barbara Bradley (Michael), Jennifer Reynolds (Jack), and Mary Vassallo (Michael). She is also mourned by a large family of grandchildren—Lindsay, Michael, Katherine, Devon, James, Thomas, John, Connor, Casey, Corinne, Matthew, Nicholas, and Allyson—as well as her great-grandchildren: Luke, Liam, Caiden, Emery, Scottie, Michael, Evie, and Jax. Barbara is also survived by her siblings, Robin Jowaisas, Vickie Jourdan, and Peter Jowaisas.

Details about services will be announced at a later date, allowing the community and family to come together to honor the life and legacy of a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to caring for others.
