News Summary

HMP Properties has launched the Spark by Hilton in Williamsburg, offering 118 budget-friendly guest rooms and complimentary breakfast. Ideally situated near local attractions, the hotel signifies Hilton’s first premium economy brand in the area. Additionally, James City County announces matching grant awards for sustainability projects and is seeking community volunteers for local advisory committees. Other initiatives include a school supply drive and free tours at the Virginia Air and Space Science Center, highlighting the county’s commitment to community engagement and improvement.

Williamsburg – HMP Properties has officially opened the Spark by Hilton Williamsburg Historic Area, located at 201 Bypass Road, aiming to provide modern accommodations at a budget-friendly price. With 118 guest rooms, the hotel features complimentary breakfast and is strategically located just minutes from major attractions such as Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, and the College of William & Mary.

This new hotel represents Hilton’s first premium economy brand, marking a significant addition to the region’s hospitality offerings. Reservations are currently available on the Hilton website, signaling the hotel’s readiness to welcome guests.

In addition to the hotel opening, James City County has introduced matching grant awards of up to $500 to enhance sustainability and strengthen community ties within neighborhoods. Grants are designed to fund projects that encourage water conservation, native and pollinator garden planting, and erosion control measures, among other environmental initiatives. The deadline for grant submissions is September 15, with applications being accepted electronically or can be dropped off at 107 Tewning Road in Williamsburg.

Moreover, in an effort to better represent community interests, James City County Parks & Recreation is seeking volunteers from the Grove Community to join a Neighborhood Advisory Committee. Committee members will serve a voluntary two-year term, advocating for local residents’ needs. Applications for committee membership are open until August 15.

In a related community initiative, WAVY-TV 10 On Your Side has launched Operation School Supplies on July 11. This campaign aims to gather school supplies for students as the new school year approaches. The campaign will culminate in a live donation event on August 1 at Patrick Henry Mall and the Target at Pembroke Square, where community partners can drop off new school supplies. Additionally, monetary donations are being accepted online for Title I schools through Chesapeake Bank.

In response to a recent rise in door-to-door solicitors within Poquoson, the City has reminded residents that all solicitors must have a permit from the Commissioner of Revenue. Unpermitted solicitors can be reported to the Poquoson Police Department to ensure community safety and compliance with local regulations.

Furthermore, AARP Virginia is offering free tours of the Virginia Air and Space Science Center as part of its Summer Wonders & Wanders series. Remaining tours are scheduled for July 24 and 31, from 1 to 3 p.m., but registration is required as spaces are limited.

Recent community events featured notable guests such as Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, Congressman Bobby Scott, and Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones. During these gatherings, scholarships and awards were presented to outstanding students and community members, including American Mathematics Competitions Awards for local middle and high school students, recognizing their academic achievements and encouraging further educational pursuits.

The opening of the Spark by Hilton and the various community programs reflect a growing commitment to hospitality and local engagement in Williamsburg and its surroundings. As both new visitors and residents participate in these initiatives, the focus on sustainability, education, and community improvement remains a key priority for local leaders.
