Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown Prepare for Spectacular Independence Day Celebrations in 2025

Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown are gearing up for grand Independence Day celebrations on July 4, 2025, featuring numerous events aimed at bringing the community together in commemoration of national pride and heritage. Colonial Williamsburg’s all-day celebration will run from 8 AM to 9:30 PM and will culminate in a fireworks display, while Yorktown will also host a family-friendly event, highlighted by a parade, activities, and its own fireworks show.

Highlights of Colonial Williamsburg’s Celebration

The day in Colonial Williamsburg will kick off with various activities accessible to the public, as the Historic Area and Art Museums will offer free admission from 9 AM to 5 PM. Visitors can expect a day filled with performances, patriotic activities, and a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

The event will feature a professional choral ensemble directed by Charles Woodward, renowned for their exceptional balance and interpretation. This group will perform on the Palace Green from 8 PM to 9:30 PM, providing a backdrop of patriotic music leading up to the fireworks display, set to begin at 9:30 PM. Ideal viewing locations for the fireworks include the Palace Green, Market Square, and the East Lawn of the Art Museum.

The Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission has selected Bill Schermerhorn, a William & Mary alumnus and experienced event designer, to oversee the festivities. Schermerhorn is known for his work in large-scale events, including the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks.

Food trucks will be available throughout the event to provide festive treats, adding to the community atmosphere as visitors bring blankets, picnic baskets, and lawn chairs to enjoy the day.

Yorktown’s Independence Day Festivities

In Yorktown, the Independence Day celebrations will begin early, with an 8K/5K run/walk at 8 AM, followed by a patriotic parade at 9 AM starting from the Yorktown Beach Picnic Area and ending at the Victory Monument. The day will feature children’s activities on Water Street, ensuring a family-friendly environment for all attendees.

The history-rich event will include a Sounds of Liberty Bell Ringing Ceremony at Riverwalk Landing at 7 PM and conclude with a fireworks display at 9:15 PM that will be visible from both the waterfront and Main Street.

Yorktown will also operate a Trolley service from 10 AM to 5 PM for free transportation during the celebration. Specific parking instructions and road closures have been issued to facilitate smooth access to the events.

Additional Events and Activities

Fort Monroe will host a separate day-long event starting at 8:45 AM. This closing celebration will feature the USAF Heritage of America Band, a naturalization ceremony for 100 new U.S. citizens, varied performances, food tasting, and craft beers. The day will culminate in a fireworks display enhanced by 400 drones at 9:15 PM. Additionally, the Heartbeat of Freedom drummers will perform, and a dance premiere titled “Free to Dream” choreographed by the Leah Glenn Dance Ensemble will highlight the festivities.

As part of Yorktown’s cultural offerings, the Sounds of Summer concert series will feature performances resuming on July 10 and continuing through August. The Williamsburg Indoor Sports Facility will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a free concert by Canaan Smith on August 9, while several operas will be showcased in The Met’s Live in HD Summer Encores starting July 23 and running until August 13.
