JCC Recreation Center pool seen under renovation with construction materials

News Summary

The JCC Recreation Center pool in James City County is closed for extensive renovations, set to be completed by November. The $2.4 million project includes resurfacing the pool, updating the deck, and improving accessibility with new features. Local swim teams will adjust their practices during the closure, utilizing alternative facilities while the renovations aim to modernize the nearly 40-year-old center.

James City County, VA – The JCC Recreation Center pool has been closed for major renovations as of June 16, with the project expected to be completed by November. The renovation is budgeted at $2.4 million and aims to enhance the facility, which is nearing 40 years old.

The extensive renovations will address a variety of needs, including resurfacing the pool, which has been showing signs of deterioration, and updating the pool deck. This renovation project will introduce an ADA-accessible entrance featuring two handrails, improving overall safety and accessibility for all users. Additionally, the outdated porcelain tile deck will be replaced with a more modern and uniform epoxied surface that is safer and easier to maintain.

In addition to the pool and deck updates, a new central drainage system will be installed, and improvements will be made to the drop ceiling and ductwork to enhance airflow in the facility. The lighting will also be upgraded to include glare-resistant fixtures, ensuring a more comfortable environment for swimmers and patrons alike. As part of the renovations, new poolside showers will be added, contributing to the enhanced user experience.

To optimize space and functionality, a portion of the permanent bleachers located along the western wall will be removed to make room for aquatics staff and a dedicated first aid room. These changes are part of a broader strategy to consolidate multiple facility improvements into a single project, which will lead to cost-effectiveness and minimize the amount of time the facility is closed.

The renovations are designed with longevity in mind, with an expected lifespan of 5 to 7 years for the interior pool resurfacing, approximately 20 years for the new epoxied deck, and at least 30 years for the new office spaces.

Local community swim teams, including the Williamsburg Aquatics Club, 757swim, and Coast Guard Blue Dolphins, regularly utilize the Rec Center pool. During this renovation period, these teams will increase their practice sessions at the “Bubble” located at Kingswood Pool. In addition, alternative swimming options will be available for community members at the Upper County Park pool, select lanes at the 757swim Aquatic Center, and William & Mary’s Bee McLeod Recreation Center.

Aquatic fitness classes that would normally take place at the Recreation Center pool will be relocated to the pool at Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Despite the ongoing renovation, two outdoor county pools will remain operational following the typical Labor Day closure.

For individuals who hold passes for the JCC Recreation Center pool, there are options available including requesting refunds for unused passes or freezing their memberships during the renovation period. Those seeking information about alternative swimming arrangements can access details on the James City County Aquatics webpage or call 757-259-4200.

The renovation of the JCC Recreation Center pool is part of a commitment to provide safe and modern facilities for the community, ensuring that residents continue to have access to valuable recreational opportunities for years to come.
