Williamsburg, Virginia — Visit Williamsburg has announced the launch of The Great American Birthday Quilt Project, celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday. This initiative invites participants from all over the United States to contribute to a large quilt by sharing their personal stories through fabric panels. The quilt will pay tribute to America’s rich past, vibrant present, and hopeful future, creating a legacy that can be appreciated by generations to come.

Individuals interested in contributing to the quilt have until November 30 to submit their fabric panel submissions. The project will culminate in the final assembly of the quilt, which is set to take place in the following year. Once completed, the quilt will be prominently displayed at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center and will also embark on a public exhibition tour at historic sites nationwide in spring 2026.

Participation and Workshops

Those looking to participate can find numerous quilt workshops available through Visit Williamsburg’s official website. The project encourages both experienced quilters and novices to join, allowing everyone to “stitch their story” into this collective work of art.

Exhibitions at The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg

The Great American Birthday Quilt Project is complemented by two exhibitions currently being showcased at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (AMCW). The first, The Art of the Quilter, opened in July at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. This exhibition features a range of quilts dating from the nineteenth century to contemporary works, highlighting the diverse stories and milestones of American society.

Over the course of three years, the Art of the Quilter exhibition will display twelve different quilts each year. Special attention is given to showcasing the multicultural aspects of American life, featuring textiles from Anglo-American, African American, German, Amish, and Mennonite communities.

The Art of the Quilter exhibit is scheduled to run through July 2024. The second exhibition, Navajo Weavings: Adapting Tradition, will open on September 10 and marks the first time that Native American textiles will be featured at the museum. This exhibition will display beautifully crafted weavings from 19th-century Navajo women, drawn from the private collection of Pat and Rex Lucke.

Focus on Education and Cultural Diversity

The Navajo Weavings exhibition aims to educate visitors about the significant cultural heritage of the Diné (Navajo) people and how they have adapted their traditional textiles for modern market needs. This exhibition will be available until December 2022.

The curators at Colonial Williamsburg are committed to ensuring that museum collections reflect the diverse tapestry of the American populace. Both exhibitions are integral to a broader initiative to utilize exceptional artifacts to narrate a more comprehensive story of America’s history and culture.

Conclusion

The Great American Birthday Quilt Project and the related exhibitions at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg provide a unique opportunity to explore and celebrate America’s diverse cultural heritage as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
