Diverse adults in a car wearing seatbelts on a highway

News Summary

Virginia lawmakers have passed a new seatbelt law, effective July 1, requiring all adult passengers in vehicles to wear seatbelts on public highways. This legislation follows the tragic death of 18-year-old Christopher King and aims to improve the state’s low seatbelt compliance rate of 75%. Advocacy from Christopher King’s mother has been instrumental in pushing for this change. With this law, Virginia joins the effort to raise awareness about road safety and prevent future tragedies.

Williamsburg, Virginia – Virginia lawmakers have passed new seatbelt legislation aimed at enhancing road safety following the tragic death of 18-year-old Christopher King. Beginning July 1, Virginia will implement a law requiring all adult passengers in vehicles to wear seatbelts when traveling on public highways. Previously, only front-seat passengers were mandated to use seatbelts, and violations could only be ticketed if there was another reason for law enforcement to stop the vehicle.

The new law comes in light of alarming statistics that indicate Virginia has the lowest seatbelt compliance rate in the United States, with only about 75% of drivers and passengers wearing seatbelts. This figure starkly contrasts the national average of 91%. Each year, an estimated 300 unbuckled Virginians lose their lives in traffic incidents, underscoring the critical need for stricter seatbelt regulations.

Christy King, the mother of Christopher, is at the forefront of the advocacy for improved seatbelt laws in Virginia. Following the tragic loss of her son, who died in a car crash while riding in the backseat of a convertible without a seatbelt, King established the Christopher King Foundation. The foundation aims to educate the public about traffic safety and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Christopher lost his life on July 4, 2020, when the driver was speeding in a 30 MPH zone. This devastating event has propelled King into action, leading her to work closely with local lawmakers and community leaders, including the James City County Police and Fire Departments, to craft the new “Christopher King Seat Belt Bill.” The bill has received bipartisan support, further emphasizing the community’s dedication to enhancing traffic safety for all Virginians.

Moreover, King has initiated an educational program titled “Junior Speed Busters,” which focuses on teaching children about traffic safety in elementary schools. These efforts aim to instill the importance of safe driving and seatbelt usage early in life, helping to pave the way for a future generation of responsible drivers.

The foundation and the new legislation seek to raise awareness and save lives by increasing seatbelt compliance across Virginia. As part of her ongoing commitment, King is also organizing the 5th Annual Cars for Chris event, set for May 17 at Williamsburg Community Chapel. This event not only promotes safe driving awareness but also serves as a tribute to her son’s memory, reinforcing the urgent need for adherence to traffic safety regulations.

The passage of this law marks the first significant update to seatbelt laws in Virginia since 1980. Christy King has expressed gratitude for the community’s support in pushing these changes, as well as the backing from Governor Youngkin and local lawmakers. Their collaboration was crucial for successfully implementing the new regulations that are expected to protect countless lives in the years to come.

King remains resolute in her advocacy efforts, continuously striving for a primary seatbelt law in Virginia. Her commitment to ensuring that all passengers, regardless of their seating position, buckle up is unwavering. As she continues her work with the foundation and local leaders, the hope is that increased awareness and adherence to seatbelt laws will dramatically reduce fatalities on Virginia roads.
