News Summary

Randall Pope from Newport News, Virginia, plans a 250-mile ride on his power chair to raise awareness and funds for Multiple Sclerosis research, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of his diagnosis. The journey begins at Christopher Newport University and ends at the Pentagon, with stops at historic college campuses. Pope aims to raise $250,000 and inspire others with his resilience and community spirit. His efforts are in collaboration with the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and he is actively engaging the public through social media for support.

Newport News, Virginia – Randall Pope, a determined Virginia resident, is set to embark on a significant journey as he plans to ride his power chair 250 miles across the state to boost awareness and fundraising for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research. This ride coincides with the 30th anniversary of his diagnosis, making it both a personal and impactful endeavor.

Diagnosed with MS in 1995 after experiencing optic neuritis, Pope’s life took a pivotal turn. His diagnosis followed a commendable service in the Army as a helicopter mechanic, culminating in a medical discharge on April 8, 1995, due to health reasons. Despite facing adversity, including a battle with throat cancer in 2016, Pope maintains a courageous outlook on life.

Pope’s ambitious ride will commence at Christopher Newport University and conclude at the Pentagon, symbolizing his commitment to raising funds and awareness for MS and those who require power wheelchairs. His goal is to raise $250,000 to support MS research and aid individuals in need of mobility solutions. The journey is intended not only to mark a significant milestone for Pope but also to inspire others facing similar challenges.

As part of his route, Pope plans to stop at several historic college campuses across Virginia. Notably, he will visit the College of William & Mary on May 28. These planned stops serve to foster a greater connection with the community and raise public awareness about MS, highlighting the importance of research and support for those affected by the disease.

Pope has partnered with the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America for this initiative, reinforcing the collaborative effort to raise awareness and funds. He will be joined by friends and family, emphasizing the community support surrounding him. Among his companions is his longtime friend Bruce White, who will ride alongside him on a bike, symbolizing friendship and solidarity throughout the journey.

While the primary objective of the ride is to promote awareness of MS, Pope’s initiative also aims to inspire individuals living with MS or other serious injuries to stay active and engaged in life. He views his power chair not just as a means of mobility but as his home, underscoring the essential role it plays in his daily life.

Pope is actively engaging the public to support his fundraising efforts through the “Rolling with Randall” Facebook page, where updates and information about the ride will be shared. Additionally, he plans to host Facebook Live updates throughout his journey so that supporters can follow along in real time and witness the progress of his ride.

Looking ahead, Pope has already begun making plans for an even larger ride in 2026. His vision extends beyond his immediate goals, as he hopes this future endeavor will continue to raise awareness about MS and the needs of those living with this chronic condition, even after his passing.

This ride is a testament to Pope’s resilience and determination, demonstrating that even in the face of challenges, a strong spirit and a supportive community can lead to impactful actions that inspire others. As he prepares to take this momentous journey, Pope embodies hope for those affected by MS and showcases the power of community in raising awareness for vital causes.
